“Google Analytics is so easy to install your mum could do it”, I heard someone say once, and it’s true.

If you’re new to web design congratulations, you’ve just found the most important tutorial you’re ever going to read. Why? Because Google Analytics governs the way thousands of websites are improved every day, and I’m gonna show you how to set it up.

Firstly you’ll need a Google Account, simply register with Google using your email address to create this account. After registering click the link in your inbox to confirm your account. Now you’ve got a Google account, login to it and visit the following link:

    https://www.google.com/analytics/provision/

Click the sign up button and follow the steps presented on the screen. Enter your website url and the Account Name will have been auto filled for you. Don’t change this. Select your Country as necessary and make sure you time zone is correct.

Enter you Last and First Name and select your country again, then agree to the Terns Of Service (if you do of course), then finally you’ll be presented with the Tracking Code.

The tracking code is what makes Google Analytics work. If installed incorrectly you will not be presented with accurate statistics and nobody wants that. To install the tracking code find the </head> field on EVERY page you wish to track and paste your code just before it!

If you’re using Wordpress (and it’s already installed) you’ll want to use a plugin called: Ultimate Google Analytics. To install it login to your Wordpress Admin area and click ‘Plugins’ on the left hand side. You will then be presented with search box.  Copy and Paste ‘Ultimate Google Analytics’ into it and install the plugin that appears with the same name. Once it’s installed you’ll need to configure it. It’s really easy to do so, simply click ‘Configure’ and type your Google username and password in. It’ll ask which account you want to type it with, select the one you just created (it should be the only one on the list). Click next and next to finish.

That should be it. Please note that some process inside of the plugins, Wordpress and Google might be slightly different and the software is always changing and improving.
